A Brief History of KayO (リコ レイ)
FROM PRINT JOURNALISM TO THE VINYL TRENCHES
- SP Magazine (1999–2003): The foundation of the journey. In the late ’90s, KayO cut his teeth in music journalism interning at SP Magazine, capturing the pulse of underground culture and the five elements of hip-hop through print reporting and grassroots, hand-to-hand flier promotion.
- StoneAgeMAG.com & The Urban Underground Film Crew (2004–2013): Moving into film tapes and digital journalism during the early days of YouTube, KayO fronted StoneAgeMAG.com and operated at the heart of the legendary Urban Underground Friday night weeklies at The Airliner. Armed with heavy camera rigs and a relentless eye for street-level culture, this era cemented his reputation as an active archivist of West Coast hip-hop—captured in classic night shoots and unfiltered hotbox interviews.
- KayO.LA (2006–Present): Evolving as an independent media hub, KayO.LA serves as the central web portal for his Sunday Morning Samba Series podcast, short films, music videos, and multimedia curation—bridging street-level journalism and digital publishing.
- Medical Music (2011): Expanding his creative imprint into live curation and interactive tech, Medical Music paired a curated cultural event with an augmented reality (AR) smartphone app, representing a distinct phase of specialized music branding and independent development.
- The Revolution Will Be Televised [Short Film] (2014): A guerrilla short film following a pirate ship (The SS Revolution), its captain (KayO.LA), and a tribe of tree-dwelling ninjas, b-girls, and artists on an all-out raid to reclaim the streets of Los Angeles. Armed with a generator and a sound system, they spark an artistic uprising of free expression beyond the limits of corporate media.
- Breakbeats & Rhymes Radio – KPFK 90.7 FM (2012–Present): Taking the journalistic ethos to live events and FM airwaves, KayO aligned with Rebels to the Grain, DJ Luman, Lord Ron, and Ralph M on KPFK’s Breakbeats & Rhymes Radio—championing true-school breaks, underground hip-hop heritage, and the preservation of the culture.
